Message from the County Administrator
December, 2017

This message is a monthly update in 2017 to better update our citizens and visitors to the website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government Offices will be closed half-day Friday, December 22, and on Monday, December 25 & Tuesday, December 26 in observance of the Christmas holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 27.

The First Half of the 2018 Real Estate Taxes are due Tuesday, December 5 at 5 p.m. in the Office of the Treasurer.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its only meeting this month on Tuesday, December 12 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room. A worksession will precede the meeting at 6:00. The tentative worksession agenda is: (1) Discussion of possible extension of Central System water line along Route 460 to Food Lion water tank; (2) Discussion of possible water looping on Route 156 from Pine Ridge Mobile Home Park to Branchester Lakes subdivision; and (3) Discussion of appropriation of funds from Dinwiddie County for shared fire services.

A ‘Swearing In’ ceremony for newly elected Prince George County officials will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 27 in the Board Room.

A reception for retiring Treasurer Jean Barker will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, December 28 at the Forehand Barn. Interested persons should contact County Clerk Bishop Knott for additional details.

A ‘Wreath Laying’ Ceremony honoring fallen police officers will be held Friday, December 1 at two locations. The first ceremony is at 9 a.m. at Merchant’s Hope Cemetery and the second at 11 a.m. at Southlawn Memorial Park.

Prince George Rotary will hold its Reverse Raffle at 6 p.m. Friday, December 1 at the Disputanta Community Center.

The Juan Stephenson Memorial Girls Basketball Tournament will be held December 1-2 at Prince George High School. Games begin at 6 p.m. each day.

Parks and Recreation Christmas Parade will be on Saturday, December 2 at 3:00 p.m. starting at Beazley Elementary and ending at Gregory Memorial.

Parks & Recreation will hold its ‘Breakfast with Santa’ from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 2 at the Community Center.

Prince George Tree Lighting Service for Families and Friends of Homicide Victims, Tuesday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m., PG Courthouse.

Prince George County Board of Supervisors Legislative Dinner Meeting will be on December 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the Prince George Library.

The Riverside Regional Jail will hold its Finance Committee Meeting & Regular Board Meeting beginning at 12:00 Noon Thursday, December 7 in the administrative offices.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, December 7 in the Emergency Operations Center.

The Prince George Social Services Advisory Board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, December 11 in the Social Services Department offices.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 11 in the Board Room.

A ‘Pet Adoption’ will be held December 15 1-4 p.m. and December 16 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Colonial Subaru in South Chesterfield from 1-4 p.m. each day.

Prince George TRIAD will hold its Christmas gathering at 12:00 Noon Monday, December 18 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center.

The James House will continue its ‘Movie & Discussion’ series at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 20 at its administrative offices.

An ‘Alzheimer’s & Dementia’ education series will continue at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 20 at Sunflower Gardens.

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 21 in the Board Room.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of December:

• The Board of Supervisors at its December 12 meeting will receive three reports: (1) VDOT; (2) The FY ’17 Audit; and (3) Update on Economic Development.

• The Board of Supervisors at its December 12 meeting will discuss prospective dates for the pre-budget worksession in January.

• The Board of Supervisors at its December 12 meeting will discuss dates for its 2018 Organizational meeting.

• The Board of Supervisors at its December 12 meeting will continue discussion on a revision to the Personnel Policy regarding Worker’s Compensation.

• The Board of Supervisors at its December 12 meeting will continue discussion on a Utility refund to the Public School Division.

• Various Parks & Recreation winter activities are underway for winter programs. Information can be received at

• The search will continue this month to fill two key positions within County Government: Director of Utilities; and Building Official.

• The Public Computer Lab at the Central Wellness Center opened October 2. The Lab will be open from 5-8 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, and 5-7 p.m. on Fridays.
