Message from the County Administrator

 January 2020 

Happy New Year!

This message is a monthly update in 2020 to better update our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government offices will be closed Wednesday, January 1 in observance of the New Year holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, January 2. 

County Government offices will also be closed Friday, January 17 in observance of the Lee-Jackson holiday and Monday, January 20 in observance of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 21.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its organizational meeting for 2020 at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 2 in the Boardroom.  Election of officers, BOS appointments and adoption of the by-laws will be considered.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its regular meetings this month on Tuesday, January 14 and Tuesday, January 28 in the Boardroom.

A Worksession will precede the January 14 regular meeting at 6 p.m.  Tentative topics include: (1) No-thru truck restrictions; and (2) New Public Safety Radio System maintenance agreement; and (3) Fire & EMS apparatus recommendations.

Free Christmas tree recycling will continue at the Convenience Site on Union Branch Road through January 11 during normal business hours.

The Extension Leadership Council (ELC) will meet at 12:00 Noon Monday, January 6 in the Community Room of the Human Services Building.

The Friends of Burrowsville School will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 7 at the Burrowsville Community Center.

The Prince George Fire/EMS Advisory Board will hold a Strategic Planning Session on Saturday, January 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the location to be determined.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, January 13 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will meet at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, January 15 in the Community Room of the Social Services Building.

The Appomattox Regional Water & South Central Wastewater authorities will meet at the ARWA Office, 21300 Chesdin Road, on Thursday, January 16, at 2:00 p.m.

The Crater Youth Care Commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 17 at the Green House Facility.

The Riverside Regional Jail Authority Finance Committee will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 23 at the Jail’s Administrative Offices. 

The Petersburg Area Regional Tourism (PART) Board will meet at 11 a.m. Friday, January 24 at the Crater Planning District offices in Petersburg.

Fort Lee will host a New Year’s Community Reception at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26 at the Lee Club.

Prince George TRIAD will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, January 27 at the Prince George Library.

The Prince George Master Gardner Program will be accepting registrations through January 10 for new classes.

The Riverside Community Criminal Justice Board of Directors will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 8 in the offices of District 19 in Petersburg.

The Recreation Advisory Commission will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 8 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center on Old Stage Road.

The Prince George Board of Zoning Appeals will hold an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 15 in the Boardroom.

The Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 23 in the Boardroom.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of January:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will recognize Delegate Riley Ingram upon his retirement from the House of Delegates.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will honor the winners of the Christmas Decoration contest; Christmas Card contest; and the Christmas Parade.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will receive the monthly report from VDOT.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will consider a Shoreline Agreement with the James River Association.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will discuss the Six-Month Work Plan as introduced by County Staff.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will consider the transfer of a Special Exception to Store Portable Toilets at 11401 Old Stage Road.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will consider projects at the Moore Recreational Complex to assist with planning for the 2021 Dixie Softball World Series.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will consider an Award of Contract for new work stations at the Emergency Communications Center.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 14 meeting will consider two public hearings: (1) Special Exception to permit a cottage industry home occupation at 6419 Tradewinds Drive; and (2) Special Exception to permit a cottage industry home occupation at 18360 Loving Union Road.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will recognize Denny Morris upon his retirement as Director of the Crater Regional Planning Commission.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will receive two reports: (1) Quarterly Financial Report; and (2) Annual Property Maintenance.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will consider purchases of Fire & EMS apparatus.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will consider approval of alerting systems for Fire & EMS stations.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will consider approval of a maintenance agreement with L3 Harris for the new public safety radio system.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its January 28 meeting will consider approval of the construction of a restroom/concession stand at New Scott Park.
  • Activities are underway for various Parks & Recreation winter activities and registration is underway for spring events. Information can be received at www. http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.
  • Construction of stormwater projects in Birchett Estates and Cedar Creek will continue this month.
  • Prince George County, Fort Lee technology personnel working to implement new 9-1-1 agreement between the two entities.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new fire station at Jefferson Park.
  • Design work is underway for water extensions on Route 460 and Route 156; construction expected to begin in the spring.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new Burn Building to provide extensive training for Fire & EMS personnel.
  • Staff has completed and submitted a grant application to state officials seeking funding that will expand broadband throughout Prince George County.
  • Planning for the FY ’21 Budget is well underway; County Administrator will introduce the Budget to the Board of Supervisors on February 25.
