Mahone Avenue access is getting a new overhead canopy; work is expected to take two months

FORT LEE— The post’s Mahone Avenue gate will close Thursday for renovation work that is expected to take about two months to complete.

Post officials had previously announced that the access point would be getting a facelift. Crews will be installing an overhead canopy over the access to shield security personnel and traffic from the elements.

The Mahone Avenue gate provides access to and from Hickory Hill Road, which extends from the post line through a sliver of Prince George County and into Petersburg, where it intersects with County Drive. Locals commonly have referred to it as Fort Lee’s “back gate.”

To accommodate the expected overflow of traffic, the post said the Lee Avenue gate off state Route 36 between Petersburg and Hopewell will have extended hours — 5 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays, and 8 a.m.-11 p.m. weekends. An additional security checkpoint will put in place on weekdays.

The A Avenue gate will be open from 5 a.m. - 8 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. weekends. Shop Road’s gate will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays and closed on weekends. The access at Temple Avenue and River Road will be open from 4:30-8 a.m. weekdays and closed on Wednesdays.

The Sisisky Boulevard gate near the Hopewell city limits remains open 24/7. The gate to the Jackson Circle housing area also is always open, but only to residents, staff and authorized guests.

An online schedule of the gate hours can be found on the Fort Lee website.
