Message from the County Administrator

October, 2019 

This message is a monthly update in 2019 to better update our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government offices will be closed Monday, October 14 in observance of Columbus Day.  Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 15.

The Board of Supervisors will hold its regular meetings this month on Tuesday, October 8 and Tuesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom. A Worksession will precede the October 8 regular meeting at 6 p.m.  Tentative topics include: (1) Discussion of concerns related to using tannerite; and (2) Profile of demographic data provided by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service.

A ceremony naming the roundabout at Allin/Courthouse Roads after fallen Prince George County soldier PFC Michael Carey will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 25 at the parking lot across from the named location.

The Czech & Slovak Festival will be held from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, October 19 on the grounds of the historic Prince George County Courthouse.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Jefferson Park Fire Station will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 6 at the corner of Brandywine & Jefferson Park Roads.

The Prince George Business Roundtable will hold its annual ‘Alumni Dinner’ at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 30 at the Petersburg Country Club.

Trick-or-Treat activities in Prince George County will be held from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, October 31 throughout the neighborhoods.  Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

‘Clean Community Day 2’ will be held from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, October 12 in the Police Department parking lot.

The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) will meet every Thursday thru November 7, from 6-9 p.m., at Oakland Baptist Church.

The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 1 at the Central Wellness Center.

The Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce Annual Fall Mixer will be held from 4:30 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 1 at the Barns of Kanak.

The Riverside Community Justice Board of Directors will hold its organizational meeting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 2 in Hopewell.

The 2nd Annual Jerry Skalsky Memorial Soccer Tournament will be held October 26-27 at 9 a.m. daily at the fields located at New Scott Park.

The Prince George County Farmers Market will be held every Saturday in October from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Scott Park. 

The Prince George Capital Improvement Planning (CIP) Committee will meet on October 2, 9 & 16 at 6 p.m. in the Kines Breakroom.

The Crime Solvers Annual Rib-Fest will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, October 3 at Scott Park.

VDOT will host a ‘Touch the Bridge’ training exercise at the Benjamin Harrison Bridge & Jordan Point Marina at 10 a.m. Friday, October 4.

The Prince George Library will host an ‘Adoption Event’ and ‘Donation Drive’ Saturday, October 4.

The Prince George High School Football Team will have home games on October 11 & 25.  Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The Friends of Burrowsville will hold a ‘Fall Plant Sale’ on Saturday, October 5 from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at the Burrowsville Community Center.

USSSA Fall State Baseball Travel Tournaments will be held October 5-6 & 12-13 at Prince George County baseball fields.  Game times begin at approximately 9 a.m. each day.

The Harbor Blast Concert series will continue on October 5 & 12 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Appomattox Boat Harbor.

A Pickleball Tournament will be held Saturday, October 5 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Central Wellness Center.

‘Zumba to Fight Breast Cancer’ will be held from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 5 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center.

The Prince George Animal Services & Adoption Center will hold an Open House from 12:00 Noon – 4 p.m. Saturday, October 5.

The Prince George Ruritan Club will host its 38th Annual ‘Seafood & BBQ Fest’ from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, October 5 at Scott Park.

A ‘Big Time Wrestling’ Tournament will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, October 5 at the Prince George High School Gymnasium.

The Prince George Social Services Advisory Board will meet at 9 a.m. Monday, October 7 in the Social Services offices.

A ‘Caregivers Café’ hosted by Crater Community Hospice will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 9 at the Petersburg Library.

The Fort Lee Federal Credit Union will host a ‘Shred Day & Food Drive’ from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon on Saturday, October 12, at the FLFCU parking lot.

Richard Bland College will host its ‘Pecan Festival’ from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Pecan Grove.  A pet adoption will also be held by Prince George Animal Services personnel.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 14 in the Boardroom.

VDOT will hold a Richmond District Transportation Meeting from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, October 15 at the Richmond Marriott Short Pump.

The Prince George Fire & EMS Advisory Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 15 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Industrial Development Authority (IDA) will meet at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, October 16 in the Community Room of the Human Services Building.

The Prince George Library will host a ‘STREAM Program’ at 5 p.m. Thursday, October 17.

The James River Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Directors will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 17 in the Prince George Library.

The Burrowsville Book Sale will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 19 at the Burrowsville Community Center.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 21 in the Boardroom.

The Cameron Foundation will host its 15th Anniversary Celebration from 4-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 at Union Train Station in Petersburg.

The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 24 in the Boardroom.

Prince George County Police and Fire & EMS departments will host its Annual ‘Chaplain’s Breakfast’ at 8:30 a.m. Friday, October 25 at Luca’s Restaurant.

‘National Drug Take Back Day’ will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, October 26 in the Prince George Police Department Parking Lot.

A ‘Harvest Festival’ will be held at the Oak Shades Mobile Home Park from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, October 26.

Prince George TRIAD will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, October 28 in the Prince George Library.

The Finance Committee of the Riverside Regional Jail will meet at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, October 30 at the Jail’s Administrative Offices.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of October:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will receive three reports: (1) VDOT; (2) Clean Community Day #2; (3) 2021 Dixie World Series.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider giving Staff the authority to advertise a public hearing for a bond issuance.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider giving Staff the authority to advertise a public hearing for a Budget amendment.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider a reimbursement resolution for the purchasing of public safety vehicles.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider a contract to construct a new public safety radio system.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider dates for a meeting with State Legislators.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 8 meeting will consider appointments to the South Centre Corridors Resource Conservation & Development Council; and the US Census Complete Count Committee.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 22 meeting will hold two public hearings: (1) E-Summons Program; and (2) Request to permit an animal boarding place within a R-A, Residential - Agricultural District at 10610 Merchants Hope Road.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 22 meeting will receive three reports: (1) Naming of Roundabout for PFC Michael Carey; (2) Clean Community Day #2; and (3) the Quarterly Financial Report.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 22 meeting will consider an Award of Contract for a new Restroom/Concession Stand at New Scott Park.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 22 meeting will consider changes to the Position Control Chart.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its October 22 meeting will consider two administrative policies: (1) Travel; and (2) P-Card.
  • Activities are underway for various Parks & Recreation summer activities and registration is underway for fall events. Information can be received at www. http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.
  • Construction of stormwater projects in Birchett Estates and Cedar Creek will continue this month.
  • Prince George County, Fort Lee technology personnel working to implement new 9-1-1 agreement between the two entities.
  • The Planning Commission is working on a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors regarding the allowance of food trucks in certain areas around Prince George County.
  • The Planning Commission is working on a 2020 update of the Prince George Comprehensive Plan.
  • Design work is underway for water extensions on Route 460 and Route 156; construction bids expected to be sought in December.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new Burn Building to provide extensive training for Fire & EMS personnel.
  • Staff has completed and submitted a grant application to state officials seeking funding that will expand broadband throughout Prince George County.
