Message from the County Administrator

September, 2019 

This message is a monthly update in 2019 to better update our citizens and visitors to our website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government offices will be closed Monday, September 2 in observance of Labor Day.  Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 3.

The first day of classes for the Prince George County Public School Division will be Tuesday, September 3. 

The Board of Supervisors will hold its regular meetings this month on Tuesday, September 10 and Tuesday, September 24 at 7 p.m. in the Boardroom.

A Worksession will precede the September 10 regular meeting at 6 p.m.  Tentative topics include: (1) Ordinance related to the e-summons program; (2) Census Complete Count Committee; (3) Food Truck Ordinance Amendment; and (4) Board of Supervisors Economic Interest Training.

A Worksession will precede the September 24 regular meeting at 6 p.m. to discuss the proposed contract to select a vendor to provide a new Public Safety Radio System.

The Board of Supervisors will also hold a one-day retreat beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 28 in the Community Room of the Human Services Building.

The Friends of Burrowsville School will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 3 at the Burrowsville Community Center.

Prince George County Government will honor its First Responders by observing Patriot Day from 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 11 in the Kines Breakroom.

A reception for new County Attorney Daniel Whitten will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 17 in the Kines Breakroom.

The 2nd Annual Jerry Skalsky Memorial Soccer Tournament will be held September 14-15 at 9 a.m. daily at the fields located at New Scott Park.

The Prince George County Farmers Market will be held every Saturday in September from 8 a.m. – 12:00 Noon at Scott Park. 

The ‘Great Beefsteak Raid’ 10th Annual Dinner will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, September 18 at Scott Park.

The Harbor Blast Concert series will continue every Saturday in September beginning at 4 p.m. at the Appomattox Boat Harbor.

A ‘Disaster Preparedness Workshop (formerly Survivor Day)’ will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Saturday, September 7 at Prince George High School.

An ‘Arm Wrestling Competition’ will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7 at the Central Wellness Center.

Morelia Mexican Restaurant will hold its Grand Opening at 2 p.m. Monday, September 9 at its location at 6619 Courthouse Road.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 9 in the Boardroom.

A ‘Retirement Reception’ honoring Delegate Riley Ingram will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 10 at The Beacon Theatre.

A ‘Caregivers Café’ hosted by Crater Community Hospice will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 at the Petersburg Library.

The Recreation Advisory Board will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 11 at the Parks & Recreation Community Center on Old Stage Road.

The Appomattox River Water & South Central Wastewater authorities will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 12 at the Petersburg office.

The Prince George Animal Services will participate in the "Dog Days of Summer" Adoption Event at River Street Market, 30 River Street, Petersburg, on Saturday, September 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The James House will benefit from a fundraiser ‘Hogs for the House’ at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 14 at Colonial Harley-Davidson located at 1701 Temple Parkway.

The Board of Zoning Appeals will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 16 in the Boardroom.

The Fire & EMS Advisory Committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 17 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Capital Improvements Plan will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 18 & 25 in the Kines Breakroom.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 19 at the Central Wellness Center.

The James River Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Directors will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 19 at the Chesterfield Cooperative Extension Office.

The Crater Youth Care Commission will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, September 20 at the Green House Facility.

A ‘Book Sale’ will be held from 10 a.m. – 12:00 Noon Saturday, September 21 at the Burrowsville Community Center.

Union Branch Baptist Church will hold Installation Services for Rev. Dr. Archie German, Sr. at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 22.  A pre-installation choir concert will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, September 20 at the Church.

Prince George TRIAD will host its ‘End of the Summer’ Picnic at 12:00 Noon Monday, September 23 at Scott Park.

Prince George Commissioner of the Revenue Darlene Rowsey will host the Central District Deputies Association Meeting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 24 at Oakland Baptist Church.

The Burrowsville Ruritan Club will host its 45th Annual Shrimp Feast at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 25 at the Club House at 17410 James River Drive.

The Riverside Regional Jail Board of Directors will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 26 at the Jail’s administrative offices.  A meeting of the Finance Committee will precede the regular meeting at 12:00 Noon.

The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 26 in the Boardroom.

The Prince George Animal Services & Adoption Center will hold a ‘Bikes & Bones’ adoption event from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28 at Colonial Harley off Temple Avenue.

The 2019 Fire & EMS Academy Graduation Ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 28, 7:00 p.m., in the PGHS Auditorium, 7801 Laurel Spring Road.

The Prince George Economic Development Department and SBDC of Longwood University will host “Marketing 101” Interactive Class for small businesses at the Prince George Library on Monday, September 30, at 3:00 p.m.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of September:

  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 meeting will receive four reports: (1) VDOT; (2) Back to School Fair; (3) National Night Out; and (4) Beechwood Manor Emergency Utility Repairs.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 meeting will consider various grant and donation appropriations.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 meeting will consider a request from the School Division to appropriate Budget transfers within the CIP Fund in the amount of $187,604.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 meeting will consider an appropriation for expenses related to the Comprehensive Services Act.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 will consider an appointment to the Social Services Advisory Committee and two appointments to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Commission.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 10 meeting will hold four public hearings: (1) Special Exception to permit an assembly hall east of 2815 Tavern Road; (2) Ordinance Amendment permitting uses in an M-3 Heavy Industrial District; (3) Rezoning request to conditionally rezone 141.79 acres from M-1, limited Industrial Zoning District to M-3, Heavy Industrial Zoning District at Quality & Hardware Drive in the Southpoint Business Park; and (4) Planned Unit Development request to permit an additional restaurant related land use such as a food truck or food trailer at 5380 Oaklawn Boulevard.
  • The Board of Supervisors at its September 24 meeting will receive four reports: (1) Quarterly Financial Report; (2) Land Use; (3) Noise ordinance related to barking dogs; and (4) State Nonarbitrage Program (SNAP) Investment Interest.
  • Activities are underway for various Parks & Recreation summer activities and registration is underway for fall events. Information can be received at www. http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.
  • Construction of stormwater projects in Birchett Estates and Cedar Creek will continue this month.
  • An architect has been hired to design a new restroom/concession stand facility at New Scott Park.
  • Prince George County, Fort Lee technology personnel working to implement new 9-1-1 agreement between the two entities.
  • Construction of a walking trail around the football field at the Central Wellness Center is expected to continue this month.
  • The Planning Commission is working on a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors regarding the allowance of food trucks in certain areas around Prince George County. 
  • The Planning Commission is working on a 2020 update of the Prince George Comprehensive Plan.
  • Design work is underway for water extensions on Route 460 and Route 156; construction bids expected to be sought in December.
  • Design work is underway for the construction of a new Burn Building to provide extensive training for Fire & EMS personnel.
  • Staff will finalize and submit a grant application this month to state officials seeking funding that will expand broadband throughout Prince George County.
  • County Staff on September 28 will be traveling to Tennessee to make a presentation regarding Prince George County hosting the 7-8 year old Dixie Youth World Series in 2021.
