Prince George County Seeking Qualified Applicants for County Attorney

Prince George County, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of County Attorney. This position reports directly to the Board of Supervisors and represents the County in all civil legal matters involving the County. The County Attorney provides advice to the Board of Supervisors, the County Administrator and all boards, departments, agencies, officials and employees of the County. The position is also responsible for drafting ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents and defending or initiating court actions in which the County or employees are a party. The County Attorney prosecutes violations of the Uniform Statewide Building Code, the Statewide Fire Prevention Code, and the County’s Zoning Ordinance. The County Attorney attends meetings of the Board of Supervisors, and other County Boards when necessary and assists with preparation of the County’s legislative requests for the General Assembly.

Any applicant must have an extensive knowledge of local government law and relevant court decisions, including topics such as: zoning, land use, employment, torts, contracts, civil rights, administrative process and real property. It is essential that the applicant possess the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas orally and in writing to both professional and lay persons. The County Attorney must establish and maintain productive working relationships with elected officials, employees, court officials, members of the bar, and the public. All applicants must show an ability to handle complex trials and appellate litigation and a demonstrated ability to craft effective solutions in a demanding and rapidly changing work environment. The office also includes an Assistant County Attorney.

Education/Training: Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school with a minimum of five years of experience as a practicing attorney in the area of local government law in Virginia. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The County would expect to be the sole client of any applicant that seeks to apply for the position. Salary and work schedule is negotiable.
