Advisory: Variety of events commemorate Fort Lee's Centennial
FORT LEE, Va. – Media are invited to a variety of special events and festivities to celebrate ‘A Century of Support to the Nation’ here and in local communities July 9 – 12.
Centennial Run, 5:30 a.m., July 9, local communities
More than 100 Soldiers will run 99 miles in surrounding cities and counties.
Centennial Celebration, 11 a.m., July 10, Williams Stadium
Free and open to the public, this event features the Black Daggers parachute demonstration team, Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps and the final mile of a 100-mile run through local communities. For information about installation access, the public can visit www.lee.army.mil/access.
Unit sporting competitions, 1 p.m., July 10, various locations on the installation
Basketball, bowling, dodge ball and volleyball tournaments conducted by the units in various locations across the installation. Spectators are welcome.
Drill and Ceremony competition, 1 p.m., July 10, Williams Stadium
Multiple teams from 59th Ordnance Brigade and 23rd Quartermaster Brigade will have six minutes to perform a lengthy list of military tasks and drills. Spectators welcome.
Competition Award Ceremony, 4:30 p.m., July 10, Williams Stadium
Garrison commander Col. Adam Butler and Command Sgt. Maj. Vittorio DeSouza will announce the winners of the sporting and Drill and Ceremony competitions followed by the retreat ceremony. Free and open to the public.
Fort Lee Documentary screening, 1, 2 and 3 p.m., July 10, Lee Theater
A 26-minute documentary about Fort Lee’s history and contributions to the defense of the nation over the past 100 years. Free and open to the public.
Time Capsule ceremony, 5:45 p.m., July 10, Lee Club
Fort Lee and community leaders will add items to a time capsule that will be sealed until 2117. Retired Army Lt. Col. Louis Martin, a centenarian, will join the Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee commander, Maj. Gen. Paul Hurley, in placing the final item. This event is not open to the public.
Documentary Screening and Band Concert, 7 p.m., July 10, Lee Theater
Area and Fort Lee leaders will view a 26-minute Centennial Documentary followed by a concert by the 392nd Army Band. Closing the event, Col. Butler, will pass the centennial baton to Col. Ralph “Bo” Clayton III, Commander, 733rd Mission Support Group, Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Fort Eustis will celebrate its centennial in 2018. Seating for this event is reserved for military personnel and invited guests.
WWI Exhibit Opening, 10 a.m., July 12, U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum
“Battle Ready: The Quartermaster Mission in World War I,” features rare artifacts from the museums extensive collection as well as educational displays, The exhibit will uncover how the Quartermaster Corps overcame adversity and transformed into a viable organizations that contributed to victory in WWI.
Ordnance Training Support Facility Groundbreaking, 1:30 p.m., July 12
This ceremony will commemorate the start of construction for a facility supporting Ordnance-related training for Fort Lee Soldiers and personnel.

Fort Lee Soldiers, families and civilian employees began a century of support to the nation in 1917 when Camp Lee was established to train the 80th Division for service during WWI. Today, Fort Lee is the Army’s Home of Sustainment and supports the training, education and development of adaptive Army professionals in fields such as transportation, supply, culinary arts and equipment repair and maintenance. Major organizations on the installation include the Defense Commissary Agency, Defense Contract Management Agency, Combined Arms Support Command, the Army Logistics University, U.S. Army Ordnance School, U.S. Army Quartermaster School and U.S. Army Transportation School. Fort Lee supports nearly 86,000 Soldiers, retirees, veterans, family members and civilian employees and boasts an economic impact of about $2.4 billion per year.
