VCU Professor to Speak at Heritage Center
in Prince George Sunday, October 30 at 2 PM

On Sunday, October 30, the Prince George County Regional Heritage Center will welcome Dr. Katherine Bassard , VCU professor and author, to introduce her new book on the writings of Prince George County native, Peter Randolph.  Born in slavery at Edloe’s plantation, adjacent to Upper Brandon, Randolph was freed by the Edloe’s in 1847 along with 65 others. Randolph’s reflections on his life in Prince George, on the institution of slavery as he knew it, and the direction his life took post-freedom, are unique. The story that Dr. Bassard has uncovered promises to be of interest to all walks of life and interests.

Of her book, Dr. Bassard writes:  I hope that readers will emerge with the sense that slavery involved millions of people over centuries of time and that it will spark a desire to hear as many different stories and narratives as we can uncover, document and research. All of the stories of slavery have not been told and the vast majority are unrecoverable. But each one that we uncover teaches us something we didn’t know before.

This event is open to the public, free of charge, with a chance to ask questions of Dr. Bassard. A reception will follow the program. There will be an opportunity to purchase a book with signature by the author. The Heritage Center is located at 6406 Courthouse Road in Prince George, 23875. The program will take place on the second floor of the Center which is fully accessible. For more information: PGHistory@aol.com or (804) 863-0212.
